The Road to Bangkok
After Dmitry’s harrowing journey to NYC, we were very relieved to board our flight to Bangkok Saturday night. Let me just say this: if you are going to use the miles you have been hoarding for years to splurge on a flight, I recommend a 16 hour flight to Asia. The trip from JFK to Taipei on EVA Airlines was over 15 hours, but felt shorter than some 5 hours flights. The Taipei to Bangkok flight (Thai Airways) was also great – super nice flight attendants who recognized our bikes by name! And no trouble getting the bikes into the overhead on either leg.
From the Bangkok airport, we took a the metro connection to the final stop, about 3 miles from our hotel. The ride from the station was very educational – I’d never ridden in a country where they drive on the left side, nor had I ever seen a street vendor casually pee into a bottle on a busy street. We took our time while riding – frequently getting off to walk the bikes both so that we could check the map and so that we could figure out how best to move with traffic.
We are safely tucked up in our hotel now and so far we are loving Thailand – the sights, the smells, and especially the food. Looking forward to seeing the city while a little less jet-lagged tomorrow!
