A Night in the Treehouse
We wanted to prolong our time in a quiet place after the stay on the farm, so headed to the Deep Jungle Home, only 10 km away. The first night was spent in a “Swiss Tent” – basically cloth walls on a concrete foundation, with electricity and attached bath. But our second night we stayed in a Treehouse – a bamboo hut on stilts at tree level.
We had already been enjoying a pretty great Macaque show at ground level in the Swiss Tent, but the Treehouse brought the primate activity to a whole new level. Plenty of Macaques, but also Grey Langurs!
We had seen a few Nilgiri Langurs on the road down from Munnar, but in the Treehouse we were completely surrounded, with a full-time monkey, bird, and grizzled giant squirrel show. I had thought that staying in a treehouse might be overrated, but in this case it was amazing.
One drawback though: thieves. First, someone stole our soap out of the bathroom. The next morning we awoke to find a small soap box dragged out of my toiletry kit and neatly chewed through, with the soap extracted. We may never solve the mystery of the missing soap, but I have my suspicions.
